Fair groups without the playground politics
Letting students pick their own teams leaves the same children picked last. A visible random split takes that away and mixes friendship groups, which is often the point of group work. Names are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle (every order equally likely) and then dealt one at a time to each team in turn, so team sizes never differ by more than one.
If you want groups balanced by ability rather than purely random, sort your list by level first and use "Number of teams" without shuffling the list yourself: random dealing still spreads people, but you may prefer to adjust a name or two by hand afterwards. To pick a single person, use the random name picker.
Questions people ask
How do I split a class into random groups?
Paste the names, one per line, choose either the number of groups or the number of people per group, and press Make teams. Everyone is shuffled with a fair Fisher–Yates shuffle and dealt out so group sizes differ by at most one.
What if the numbers don't divide evenly?
Names are dealt round-robin, like cards, so with 25 students in 4 groups you get groups of 7, 6, 6 and 6. Nobody ends up alone.
Can I keep the teams?
Copy them as text with the Copy button, and they are remembered in this browser until you make new ones.
Can I pick team captains?
Tick "Mark a captain" and the first person dealt to each team is marked. Since the order is random, so is the captain.
